Edinson Cavani was apparently promised change in Paris this summer, but that may not be the case and could spark a move before the window shuts.
Edinson Cavani’s name has rarely been out of the news this summer. Prospective moves to Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City have all been mentioned, but he has mostly denied any future away from Paris due to the talks he had with Coach Laurent Blanc this summer, but it seems like there could be future problems for the Uruguayan striker in the French capital.
It was understood that Cavani had spoken to Blanc and had been given assurances that he would play a more central role beside Zlatan Ibrahimovic this season.
Last season, Blanc favoured playing 4-3-3, with Cavani coming in off the right-flank. He was not played so much as a winger, but a forward with freedom to drift inside when the space was available. He scored 16 goals in Ligue 1 playing that role, so it is hard to say it did not work.
However, the striker is apparently still unhappy and it was suggested that this season he would get his way.
Speaking to French radio station RMC this week, Yohan Cabaye was asked about the possible change in system and his response should put Cavani and his English suitors on alert.
“The coach has not talked about it. Each training session or match has been with the same system. He has never addressed the idea of changing to two strikers and two defensive midfielders.
Maybe he has this idea in the corner of his brain, but in any case, he did not tell us anything.”
There is a chance that Blanc could play 4-3-1-2, so it would necessarily demand any changes from the midfield trio, but you would think that any change, no matter how small, would have been discussed with the team.
If Cavani is continually asked to play on the right of the attack, especially before the transfer window closes, he could try to force a move away from Paris at the last minute.
It is a long shot, but if any of the English clubs, including United and Chelsea, were serious about making a move for Cavani, there could be a glimmer of hope that the former Napoli striker could become available very soon.
