Chelsea ended Jose Mourinho's first season back at Stamford Bridge without a title, having come up short in both the Premier League and the Champions League. Now, armed with £80m worth of new signings in Atletico Madrid duo Filipe Luis and Diego Costa, Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas and Blues legend Didier Drogba, Chelsea will be expected to compete on all fronts this season.
Yet despite having arguably the strongest squad in the Premier League, the Blues continue to be linked with new signings. Roma centre back Mehdi Benatia is the latest big name suggested as a £30m transfer target, whilst more low key moves for Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Adrien Rabiot and QPR striker Loic Remy have also been speculated.
And today, one of the more surprising transfer rumours was churned out by El Mundo Deportivo in Spain, who suggested that Chelsea have now entered the race to sign Fiorentina winger Juan Cuadrado, and will look to beat Manchester United to his signature.
The 26-year-old starred at the World Cup for Colombia, and is valued at around £35m by the Serie A side, who will now struggle to keep hold of Cuadrado. Barcelona are also in the running for his signature, but it'd be unlikely to see Chelsea make a strong bid for him.
The Blues have already invested heavily in their attacking midfield options, with Eden Hazard, Oscar, Willian, Andre Schurrle and Mohamed Salah all established international footballers, and those five stars should compete fiercely for places in the Chelsea team this season.
Adding another player into that mix seems redundant for Mourinho, who should be focusing his attention - and his funds - on signing another centre back or another striker. Even though some teams have seen Cuadrado as a right back, Chelsea have Cesar Azpilicueta and Branislav Ivanovic competing there, so there appears to be no room at the inn for someone like Cuadrado.
The speculation could simply be a ploy to try and get United to overpay for Cuadrado, and despite the rumours of Chelsea's interest having allowed Marko Marin to join Fiorentina, this rumour ends up firmly in our transfer bin.
