Leeds United second most popular bet to relegation favourites Blackpool for Championship relegation, according to statistics on www.oddschecker.com.
Massimo Cellino’s portrayed image in the media spotlight, it would seem, has caused enough doubt over the Yorkshire club that punters have put their money where their mouth is and backed Leeds United for a return to League One next season.
Blackpool, the heavy favourites for relegation, have swallowed up 46.12% of the punters money in the market for relegation, but Leeds are firmly placed in second with 16.5% going on Cellino’s side. And when you compare it to the third most popular bet in the market, Birmingham at 6.0%, it does show that fans are backing the Elland Road club for a season of suffering - but is that fair?
Most Leeds fans would argue, rather than being a poor side, they are an unknown entity. Under Cellino’s ownership and guidance there is always a chance that an unknown gem from the Italian divisions could sign up at any moment and spring the Yorkshire club into life. However, at the same time, the ‘unknown entity’ label is arguably the reason people have decided to lump on a season of misery for Leeds.
Hockaday may not turn out to be the diamond in the rough Cellino hopes and the players coming over from Italy may struggle to make the grade in the Championship. It’s a situation that, until proven otherwise, will continue to linger in the minds of football supporters around the country.
Nevertheless, the majority of Leeds United supporters have given the current regime their full support and if it does work out in their favour, they will no doubt be happy to see the punters lose their money at the hands of the bookies.
