On this day: Liverpool lose £14m on winger; £11m target admitted Tottenham desire

On the 13th August 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Liverpool, West Ham and Tottenham Hotspur.

Let's cast our eyes back to this exact day, the 13th August 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 13th August 2013…

Down-Ing out

A year ago today and Liverpool flogged dud winger Stewart Downing for just £6 million to West Ham United. The England international had joined the club at the peak of his career from Aston Villa back in 2011 - in a deal that cost the club a whopping £20 million during their spend heavy days of Andy Carroll and co. Liverpool made a £14 million loss on the player.

He was however in Brendan Rodgers' envelope for last summer and told he would not get game time at Anfield so left for Upton Park - where again his form has been mixed.

Eriksen for Tottenham

Then Ajax midfielder Christian Eriksen was admitting an interest in playing for Tottenham Hotspur. He told media in his Danish homeland:

"Tottenham are a great club. I know from Vertonghen that it is a good club which is interesting. But there has not been any contact. I do not know if I am going to leave Ajax. We'll find out in two weeks. There are to my knowledge no negotiations right now either with a new club or Ajax. If there is a good approach, I see as an opportunity to try something new, but if nothing comes, I do not mind staying."

it came amid plenty of interest from across Europe including PSG, Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City and Zenit St Petersburg.

But in the end he did choose Spurs, signing for £11 million on 30th August - going on to become the club's best summer signing in an excellent debut campaign.
