Marouane Fellaini may have been dealt some harsh treatment at Old Trafford last night, but his performance in their friendly against Valencia appears to have won some of the fan-base around.
Fellaini was jeered by United supporters during the club’s final pre-season match, but he got the last laugh – scoring a late winner after coming off the bench.
The Belgian midfielder has had a torrid time since joining Old Trafford last summer, with his performances in a United shirt often short of the quality required, but his goal last night was enough to convince some of fan-base that he should be given another chance.
Fellaini has been linked with a move to Napoli for much of the summer so far, but his goal is sure to have done his chances of staying with United no harm.
In what was Louis van Gaal’s first game in charge at Old Trafford, he brought the powerful midfielder off the bench in the second half to great effect as Fellaini put in one of his best performances in since completing a move from Everton.
The 26-year-old’s goal will steal the headlines, but his general play was excellent and he performed a commanding role in the centre of the pitch – as he was brought in to do by David Moyes.
It has led to United fans reacting positively on Twitter and, although many are still unconvinced by Fellaini, many of the fan-base now want him to be given a second-chance.
Here are some of the best tweets on Fellaini’s performance against Valencia.
Kagawa or Fellaini? With Januzaj and Lingard available to back up Mata, I'd prefer to see Fellaini stay as he's a better CM than Kagawa.— The LVG Era Begins (@SagarGGMU) August 13, 2014
IMO Fellaini isn't good enough for United and never will be. However booing him is as pointless as it is embarrassing -wont help him improve— JIM (@comeonref123) August 13, 2014
Not gonna lie.. Loved it when Fellaini came on last night & did well. The whole situation has been ridiculous from start to pssible finish.— Chris Melia (@Sealmonster) August 13, 2014
Fellaini should have followed Moyes, a one day performance can't be used as gauge #mufc— Biko Obimbo (@BikoObimbo) August 13, 2014
Fellaini honestly did well for me yesterday. I'd give him a chance first. Di Maria is who we need right now. Not vidal.— Darshan Nambbiar (@Darshan_N7) August 13, 2014
If fellaini can play like that for van gaal I'd give him another year we stil need vidal tho sell nani anderson bring in vidal CB blind— Manchester United 20 (@MANUTD20x) August 13, 2014
I don't know about ya'all but I think Fellaini showed he could be relevant yesterday, he was an authority yesterday on the pitch.— Zizi Hannafi (@Hannyzi) August 13, 2014
I can see Fellaini get a season more to prove himself #Mufc— Seth (@Sirth_quorantyn) August 13, 2014
I think that @ManUtd should keep hold of Fellaini until January. I seriously think that he could flourish under Van Gaal.— Heisenberg (@Aqib_Anwaaar) August 13, 2014
That's why we should keep Fellaini, stuck for a goal launch it up to him and he will get ya a few goals. Not the prettiest but works.— Graham Balfe (@Balfee) August 12, 2014
