Liverpool-linked World Cup star expects Bayern Munich stay

After being strongly linked with a move to Liverpool, Swiss winger Xherdan Shaqiri says he expects to stay at Bayern Munich this summer.

Bayern Munich winger Xherdan Shaqiri says he expects to remain at the club this summer, despite on-going speculation surrounding his future.

The 22-year-old found playing time hard to come by last season behind likes of Franck Ribery, Arjen Robben and Thomas Muller in the pecking order, make just 17 league appearances during Pep Guardiola’s first campaign in charge.

Going on to impress for Switzerland at the World Cup, where he netted a hat-trick in the side’s final group game against Honduras, it had been anticipated that the 32-times capped international would be leaving the Allianz Arena in the following months, with Liverpool thought to be the leading potential destination.

Big-spenders Monaco were also rumoured to have entered the race in recent weeks but, with the Bundesliga champions said to be keen to keep hold of the former Basel prospect, and with a contract running until 2016, Shaqiri concedes that the chances of a move during this transfer window are slim.

‘I am a player of Bayern Munich as I am under contract with the club,’ he told BILD.

‘Basically, I believe I will be staying on at Bayern Munich.

‘But as long as the transfer window is open, anything could happen in the very end.’

Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummeingge had previously admitted to receiving approaches from England and Italy for Shaqiri, but stressed that all offers have been rejected.

‘We’ve had several enquiries from teams in England and Italy,’ he told the club’s official website.

‘I’ve never had a conversation because we are convinced he will have a good career with us. He must stay healthy, (but) the coach is convinced by him.’

Liverpool were reportedly willing to pay £15 million for Shaqiri earlier this summer, with the two sides even said to have held talks, but it appears they will have to look elsewhere to bolster their attack for the coming season.
