The 27-year-old only joined Hull in January in a £7 million move from West Brom but Koeman wants a proven Premier League striker to join the Saints ahead of his first campaign in England, and the club have made a £12 million move for the Irish forward.
Southampton have had a busy summer with key stars leaving, though several new faces have already arrived and Long's arrival would add more firepower.
Graziano Pelle has been brought in from Feyenoord, and the powerful forward will be partnered with Long if a deal is confirmed for the Irishman.
Although the Hull striker would bring in some much needed Premier League experience to accompany the new arrivals, Long has yet to score more than nine goals in a single league campaign in his career.
He netted three times West Brom before scoring four goals in 15 appearances after joining Hull last season, and he will need to be at his best to justify the £12 million Southampton are prepared to pay for him.

|Shane Long||West Brom/Hull City||FW||30||7||2||1.73||12.67||32.00||2,244|
Long is always a threat because of his pace and awareness in the box but he will need to start scoring more goals as he has yet to score more than eight in a Premier League season.
He could form a solid partnership with Pelle if Koeman is set to start with two strikers this season, but a £12 million price-tag will be difficult to live up to for the Irishman.
Will Shane Long be a good signing for Southampton?
