Arsene Wenger has been linked with a move for Schalke 04 captain according to the latest Arsenal transfer news.
If Arsenal are legitimately interested in Schalke 04 and Germany's versatile defender Benedikt Howedes, who is adept at centre back, left back and in defensive midfield, then they will likely have to guarantee the player of regular first-team football as Sport Bild have commented that the World Cup winner is "unlikely to want to sit on the Gunners bench" due to the flourishing defensive partnership Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker enjoy at N5.
Since the ratification of the £15 million sale of erstwhile Arsenal skipper Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona, Arsene Wenger is light of options when it comes to his rearguard, with inexperienced 19-year-old Calum Chambers the only recognised option to act as cover should one of Koscielny or Mertesacker suffer injury.
As such, the French coach will re-enter the summer market and is believed to be looking at one player who can fulfil a multitude of positions expertly, such as Howedes, Luiz Gustavo or William Carvalho.
Bild wrote earlier today, Wednesday: "[Wenger] is still looking for a new defensive player since the transfer of Thomas Vermaelen [and it is] reported here that Arsenal will look to sign Howedes.
"However, it is unlikely that Schalke can sell the World Champion, especially as the Royal Blues have just loaned Kyriakos Papadopoulos to Bayer Leverkusen and Howedes is unlikely to want to sit on the Gunners bench."
