Former Manchester United defender Mickael Silvestre believes the potential signings of Arturo Vidal and Angel Di Maria would prove a massive coup for the club.
Vidal has been linked with a move from Juventus throughout the summer, with a deal said to be inevitable after provisional terms were agreed between the two sides.
Di Maria, meanwhile, had looked set to leave Real Madrid for big-spenders Paris Saint-Germain, following the additions of Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez, before club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi claimed the winger was ‘too expensive’.
An unused substitute in Real’s 2-0 Super Cup win over Sevilla, Louis van Gaal had hinted last week that the Argentina international was one of his main transfer targets, and Silvestre sees both midfielders being excellent fits in the Dutchman’s side.
‘Of course those two players are great,’ he told Goal.com. ‘They are top players and will lift United.
‘United is a club which is famous and everybody wants to go there, including the top players like Angel Di Maria. I think they will be a good addition to the current squad.’
With the club also strongly linked to Ajax’s Daley Blind, as well as Fiorentina wide man Juan Cuadrado, Silvestre sees no reason why United can’t compete for the title in van Gaal’s first season in charge, though the Frenchman warns that big-name signings alone won’t guarantee success.
‘They had a very good World Cup and we know that both of them are quite capable so, they will do well at United,’ he added.
‘However, it’s not just a two man team but the entire unit has to make that work. But yes, they need good signings. I don’t know if those two will join United but in case they do, they would be good.’
