Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on Calum Chambers: He tells me to switch on!

Established Arsenal first-teamer Oxlade-Chamberlain has revealed that one of the club's signings, a 19-year-old no less, is already giving him instruction.

Even though it is Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, an established Arsenal athlete thanks to three seasons in North London despite, who is acting as the mentor to summer recruit Calum Chambers, a 19-year-old acquired from Southampton, it is the latter who is giving instruction to the former.

Confirming to the club's official website, Chamberlain, 20, said he is "taking Calum under [his] wing".

Judging from the pair's burgeoning relationship off the field during pre-season, as well as photographs of them celebrating the 3-0 Community Shield victory Manchester City last Sunday, manager Arsene Wenger will hope their partnership can emerge on the field, also.

If it is Chamberlain who is showing Chambers around London Colney and the Emirates Stadium, though, it may be  Calum who is helping the midfielder on the field: "He's on the pitch trying to tell me to switch on and that's a really good sign because it shows he's feeling confident and comfortable and that's what we like to see."

He continued: "We saw him play for Arsenal for the first time at the Emirates Cup and I thought he was superb for a 19-year-old playing centre back, against really good players. I thought he looked very assured and he's going to be a great talent for the club."

Chamberlain will have already been aware of Chambers when the pair were progressing through the Saints academy, an experience he has admitted is "weird".

“It's really good to see him here. It's almost weird because I can remember being in his position a few years ago - coming from Southampton to a big club like Arsenal - even though Southampton is a big club.

"But to come to a team like Arsenal, he's playing with players like Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez. When you move to a team like Arsenal it's very surprising to start off with, but he has settled in really quickly and all the boys love him.

"He seems like he's enjoying himself so I think he's going to have a good time here."

Chambers may well keep his place in Arsene Wenger's first team line-up this weekend, as Arsenal host Crystal Palace on Saturday, August 16.
