Ex Manchester United mainstay believes the prices of Manchester City's latest buy and David Luiz spells bad news for Chelsea in pursuit of Real Madrid man.
Chelsea may have learned a hard lesson in the current transfer window.
David Luiz, sold to Paris Saint-Germain for a seemingly exorbitant sum of £50 million, has helped perpetuate a barmy old market.
This has been noted by former Manchester United defensive mainstay Rio Ferdinand, now at Queens Park Rangers, who posted on his official social media account his thoughts on current price-tags.
Mangala 31m & Luiz 50m...how much would Varane cost with these valuations at the moment ??! 60-70m??— Rio Ferdinand (@rioferdy5) August 12, 2014
Considering two of the top four highest transfer fees (Luiz to PSG for £50 million, 2014; Thiago Silva to PSG for £35 million, 2012; Eliaquim Mangala to Manchester City for £32 million, 2014; Rio Ferdinand to United for £30 million, 2002) received for a centre back were negotiated in the past two months alone it is logical to presume that youngsters with a strong resale value who are already operating an elite level would command a high price.
That is certainly the view of Ferdinand, who believes Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane could be worth between £60 million and £70 million, according to current market trends.
That, of course, spells bad news for Chelsea, as Mourinho has oft been linked with a Varane reunion having coached him and helped nurture his development at various stages two years ago.
