Sir Alex Ferguson

Manchester United legend elected not to watch the club's first match at Old Trafford under Louis van Gaal.

Record breaking Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson elected to stay away from the Red Devils first home game under new boss Louis van Gaal.

The Scotsman was a regular visitor at Old Trafford last season, and at away games, overseeing the man he chose to replace him in David Moyes, struggle to do so.

Former Dutch international boss Van Gaal, who got the better of Ferguson's United in the Champions League in 2010, met the fans at United's home ground for the first time during their clash with Valencia.

Instead, Sir Alex Ferguson was pictured in Cardiff, watching on as Real Madrid beat Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup.

Ferguson has fair reason to be in attendance there, he is UEFA's official coaching ambassador and sits on a technical committee.

He is fully expected to be back watching United against Swansea at the weekend, but perhaps wisely chose to take a night off and check out his former protege Ronaldo, 11 years to the day that he signed him for the Red Devils.
