Saints legend Matt Le Tissier has said that Arsenal's Calum Chambers will be the youngster to watch this season.
Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier has picked Calum Chambers as his young player to watch in the upcoming Premier League season.
Chambers moved to Arsenal from St. Mary’s this summer in a deal worth around £16 million and has already impressed fans of the North-London club.
The 19-year-old has been deployed as a centre-back during his time in an Arsenal shirt, despite playing a right-back during his career so far, but has not looked out of place and Le Tissier believes that he will continue to shine if given the opportunity.
“If he gets a regular starting berth then I think Calum Chambers will be a good young player to watch,” Le Tissier said. “I've seen plenty of him at Southampton and I know Arsene Wenger is already speaking highly of him.”
It is noticeable that he has picked Chambers rather than Luke Shaw, who also departed Saints for Manchester United this summer, as his player to watch.
Shaw made a huge impact last season, forcing his way into the England squad, but regular Southampton watchers have backed Chambers to be an even better player than the £30 million United signing.
The problem for Chambers, though, is that Shaw is likely to receive far more first-team football this season.
United are noticeably short at left back following the loss of Patrice Evra this summer and he looks set to be their first-choice, whilst Chambers has his route to Arsenal’s starting line-up blocked by some experienced pros.
The partnership of Per Metersacker and Laurent Koscielny at the heart of Arsenal’s defence was one of the highlights of their season last year, whilst Mathieu Debuchy has been brought in as their first-choice right-back during this transfer window.
As a result, Chambers’ new manager, Arsene Wenger, has actually said he sees his new buy as a defensive midfielder in the future and it will be interesting to see if he is utilised there this season.
Le Tissier is clearly hoping that he will be and is expected him to be a major success if he is.
