Pablo Zabaleta gives his opinion on the signing of Eliaquim Mangala

Pablo Zabaleta has shared his thoughts on the recent signing of fellow defender Eliaquim Mangala from FC Porto.

In one of the transfer stories that has spanned the duration of the summer, this week Manchester City finally completed the signing of Eliaquim Mangala from FC Porto for a fee of around £32 million.

It didn't come as a surprise as the club had even leaked a video of Mangala at the club last month, and it now seems as if City have finished with their transfer business for this year. Mangala joins Willy Caballero, Bacary Sagna, Bruno Zuculini, Fernando and Frank Lampard as the new recruits and Pablo Zabaleta is particularly excited by Mangala.

The 23-year-old arrives with a strong reputation from his time in Portugal and also in Belgium with Standard Liege. Speaking to Sky Sports, Zabaleta said  "He’s only 23, I can’t believe it but sometimes this is what you need for a centre-back in the Premier League. He’s physically strong; he’s really good in the air. He’s also good technically so he looks a very good player."

The arrival of Mangala and Sagna significantly strengthens the defence as they are proven players and the club can now be confident of replicating last season's success. The defence was probably the only area that let them down, but with more competition for places one would think certain players will now step up their game.

Mangala was in the French squad at this summer's World Cup although he did not feature and has now become the most expensive defender in the British game. He will most probably become Vincent Kompany's defensive partner ahead of Martin Demichelis and Matija Nastasic.

The French defender has won three league titles in the last five years and will be hoping to make it a title winning debut season at Manchester City.
