Everton's Premier League season opener is drawing ever closer, but manager Roberto Martinez has fitness concerns over right back Seamus Coleman, winger Kevin Mirallas and striker Romelu Lukaku. The Spaniard says he's hopeful that the trio will play, but will see how things play out for the rest of the week.
"All three are going to train normally with the team today, so we need to assess how they are and how they go through the week before any decisions are made on Saturday," Martinez said. "It's really good to see Rom and Kevin reaching a really good level of fitness so quickly, but we don't know yet if they're going to be ready for the weekend. Seamus is training with the team and had the 'all okay' from a scan yesterday, so that's very good news as well."
Another player pushing for fitness is Ivorian striker Arouna Kone, who has been out injured since November after knee surgery. The former Wigan star arrived at Goodison Park in a £5m deal last summer, and Martinez believes that the former Sevilla man will be back soon - possibly in time to face Liverpool at the end of September.
"Arouna is training well and is still in his own programme, but he has been working with the team as well," said Martinez. "We’re very positive about Arouna being able to play some sort of competitive football in the next four to five weeks."
On the transfer front, Martinez may have landed permanent deals for loan stars Gareth Barry and Romelu Lukaku, but will look to land another loan players in Chelsea's Christian Atsu, with the former Wigan boss saying a deal is close.
"Everything has been agreed with Christian - it's just a matter of finalising little details more with his work permit and personal situation," he said. "That will probably take a couple of days to get sorted but we have an agreement in principle to make the move as a loan deal until the end of the season."
Despite already having Kevin Mirallas, Aiden McGeady and Steven Pienaar out wide and Atsu to come, the Toffees are being linked with a move for Parma's Jonathan Biabiany. The pacey Frenchman, 26, has impressed in Serie A, and Everton are ready to fight with Southampton and West Brom to try and wrap up his signature.
