Chelsea transfer news: £30m defender bid, striker search and Khedira blow

All the morning news, views and transfer rumours from Stamford Bridge...

Chelsea are reportedly interested in AS Roma defender Mehdi Benatia.

According to The Express, the Premier League giants will make a £30 million bid for the highly-rated 27-year-old centre-back.

The Blues wanted to sign Real Madrid youngster Raphael Varane, but having failed in their attempt to recruit the France international, they have ‘switched their attention to Benatia’.

It has also been reported by the paper that if Chelsea sign the Morocco international, then they will have to sell at least one foreign player because they will have exceeded their allowed quota under Premier League rules.

Chelsea have also been linked with a move for Queens Park Rangers striker Loic Remy, who had an impressive 2013-14 campaign on loan at Newcastle United.

An injury to summer signing and club legend Didier Drogba means that manager Jose Mourinho is back in the market for a striker.

Meanwhile, the London club have suffered a blow in their reported quest to sign Germany international midfielder Sami Khedira from Madrid.

Arsenal have also been linked with a move for the 2014 World Cup winner, but Los Blancos coach Carlo Ancelotti has said that the 27-year-old is not for sale this summer.

‘He’s not leaving, he’s a Real Madrid player’, said the Italian (click here to read more). ‘He has a contract until June 30, 2015 and that’s all there is to say’.
