Robbie Savage mocks victorious Arsenal goalscorer

Robbie Savage has mocked the decision to award the Community Shield man of the match award to Olivier Giroud.

Arsenal's Olivier Giroud scored an impressive goal in the club's 3-0 victory against Manchester City in the Community Shield, and it was enough to earn him the game's individual accolade.

The FA named him as man of the match, even though he played just the 45 minutes of the contest.

The decision was a little harsh on the excellent midfield pair of Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey, who themselves had scored goals in the first half.

BBC pundit Robbie Savage certainly did not agree with the decision, mocking it via his Twitter page:

So did Giroud deserve his award? They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but there are a few statistics to rightly suggest the adulation his performance received was a little over-the-top.

For instance, the Frenchman touched the ball only 18 times. Of these, he completed only 12 passes.

His goal, was from his one and only shot on target. Ruthless yes, but he did not add much else in terms of being a threat to a vulnerable City defence, while he was also caught offside on one occasion.

It is not to say Giroud played badly, but certainly there were more commendable candidates in a superb all-round Arsenal team display.
