The former Arsenal defender says that he is delighted to have joined Barcelona - as they have the 'world's greatest players.'
Thomas Vermaelen says that he is delighted to have joined Barcelona, after completing a move from Arsenal worth around £15 million at the weekend.
Vermaelen was officially unveiled as a Barca player yesterday and placed a photo on his Instagram expressing his delight at the move.
He posted a picture, which can be seen above, of him in a Barcelona shirt with the caption: “I am very happy and excited to be a FC Barcelona player now. It is a beautiful club, with the world's greatest players. I am looking forward to perform on the pitch and can’t wait to feel the amazing atmosphere in Camp Nou. Let's have a great season!"
Vermaelen joins the Catalan giants at one of their lowest points in recent history. After dominating club football for so many years, Barca were shown up last year to be lacking and have seen their famous ‘tika’taka’ brand come under question.
It appears to now be outdated, with many sides knowing how to counter it, and the effectiveness of a once devastating ideology appears to have worn off.
Last season they were outperformed in La Liga, as Atletico Madrid claimed the title, and in the Champions League and they will now be looking to seize their crown as the top club in world football once again.
Luis Enrique, the newly appointed boss, has been tasked with doing this and one of his first priorities has been sorting out a backline which was particularly porous last season against the very best.
Vermaelen was one of his first additions in this sense and the Belgian is seen as an ideal candidate for a Barcelona defence.
Although he has not played too much football of late at Arsenal, Vermaelen is technically adept as well as a strong centre-back and the feeling is that he could suit Barcelona’s demanding style of possession based football.
He will in competition for a place with Gerard Pique, Javier Mascherano and fellow new signing, Jeremy Mathieu, for a place at the heart of Barcelona’s defence as they look to make vast improvements on last season.
