Fernando has welcomed his new Manchester City team-mate, Eliaquim Mangala, to the club after it was confirmed the defender had completed a £32 million move today.
Mangala has been on the verge of a switch to the Etihad for much of the summer so far, but it has taken a while for the club to announce it.
Now he has been officially unveiled, it appears that it is not just the fans who are happy with his transfer – with Fernando delighted to welcome his former team-mate to the club.
The pair played together at Porto for the past three years and it hasn’t taken long for them to be reunited in England.
Fernando joined the Premier League champions earlier in the transfer window, and played during the club’s 3-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Community Shield.
He will be hoping that better times are ahead for him and his teammate, who has arrived at a hefty price.
Mangala is considered one of the finest defenders in the world, but the fee paid is high and he will have to put in a series of top performances to justify it.
He joins City to fill in the weakest position in their team. Whilst the club have a wealth of options in every other department, the centre-back pairing has remained problematic.
Vincent Kompany is widely regarded as one of the best defenders in England, but a lack of world-class partner for him has seen problems arise against the very best.
Martin Demichelis was generally chosen to operate alongside the City captain last season, but Mangala has been signed as an upgrade on the Argentine who was often exposed against pacey front-lines due to his lack of mobility.
The French defender has made 51 appearances for Porto over the past three seasons and will go straight into City’s first-team for their opening game of the season against Newcastle United on Sunday.
