Nigel de Jong spent much of his summer under the guidance of Louis van Gaal, narrowly missing out on a trip to the World Cup final in Brazil with the Netherlands.
Whilst the 29-year-old went on holiday following the Oranje’s victory in the competition’s third-place play-off, however, van Gaal went straight to work as Manchester United manager.
And the personal connection between the two countrymen has seen de Jong linked with a move to his former international boss’s new club.
Late last week reports claimed United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to be working ‘tirelessly’ to bring the ex-Manchester City man to Old Trafford for £8 million.
Whilst United can count on creative talents like Juan Mata and Ander Herrera in midfield, signing a proper holding midfielder looks a must and de Jong certainly fits the bill.
Yet for the time being, he remains with the Rossoneri. De Jong took to Twitter on Monday to post a photo of his return to Milanello for pre-season training after his post-World Cup hiatus.
The Dutchman accompanied his picture with a declaration of his ‘dedication’, something Milan fans will be hoping to see from him this season with the squad largely in disarray.
United by all indications are looking to pluck away the tenacious midfielder to aid their own cause, with the ultimate success of such an operation yet to become clear.
For the moment at least he remains committed to Pippo Inzaghi’s side - and whether United and van Gaal will be able to change that before deadline day remains to be seen.
