Giuseppe Bellusci set for Leeds United medical - report

Leeds United appear to have tied up a deal with Catania for Giuseppe Bellusci, with the defender set for a medical in the near future.

Giuseppe Bellusci is set to complete a medical at Leeds United tomorrow or Wednesday, according to reports in Italy.

The centre-back will move to Elland Road on season-long-loan, with Leeds having an option to buy him if he impresses at the end of the campaign.

Bellusci, who currently plays for Serie B side Catania, has been made available following the side’s relegation from the Italian top flight last season, and Leeds have acted quickly to snap him up.

He will become one of a number of Italian imports to join the Whites over the summer, as new owner Massimo Cellino looks to stamp his identity on the club.

Bellusci comes at a time when Leeds are desperate for additions, particularly in the heart of their defence. The club allowed Tom Lees to leave this summer and join Sheffield Wednesday, and have been looking for a replacement ever since – with the 24-year-old seemingly one of their targets to fill this void.

Leeds had previously been linked with making a move for Chesterfield’s Liam Cooper, but could not agree on a fee.

They have also appeared close to landing a deal for Juventus’s Frederik Sorensen, but at the last minute there seems to have been a stumbling block and the transfer appears to have fallen through.

Leeds’s move for Bellusci adds further credence to that, as they are unlikely to want to sign two players who play in the same position, on big-wages, over the summer.

This is the second time that Leeds have been close to securing a deal for Bellusci - last time talks with the Italian youth-international fell through over his wages.

A compromise has been met now, though, and he will become one of six additions which Cellino has targeted to bring into the club as soon as possible.

Leeds lost their first game of the Championship season to Millwall 2-0 and take on Accrington Stanley in the League Cup on Tuesday night, but Bellusci’s first match is likely to be against Brighton & Hove Albion this weekend.
