Giroud: Arsenal will be stronger with these three World Cup stars

Olivier Giroud believes that Arsenal will be stronger now that their trio of World Cup winners have returned to training.

Lukas Podolski, Mesut Ozil and Per Mertesacker were all granted extended leave over the summer after their victorious time in Brazil over the summer, but returned to Arsenal today and Giroud will certainly be pleased by their arrival.

“When our German World Cup players join us we will be stronger and hopefully stay that way until May,” he was quoted as saying yesterday.

The German heroes will be three of Arsenal’s most key players, alongside Giroud, as the Gunners aim to win the Premier League title this year.

Last season they had put up a valiant effort at keeping up with the pace-setters, but their form dropped after the turn of the year and they ended up down in fourth place.

The French striker believes that Arsenal – who have added Alexis Sanchez, David Ospina and Calum Chambers to their squad this summer – will avoid a repeat of that scenario this year, though, after their spending during the transfer window.

“Last year we did well until March and then we had a bad run after,” he said.

"We have a good quality squad and that is why I think we will be stronger this year. We wanted to come back and be stronger than last year.”

They have started off their campaign well, too – winning the Community Shield yesterday with a 3-0 win over Manchester City.

In the game Giroud played an eye-catching role, coming off the bench to score Arsenal’s third in spectacular fashion.

A striker who has been occasionally criticised for his profligacy in-front of goal, Giroud took his one chance in the annual curtain-raiser at Wembley, scoring a memorable strike from 25 yards.

It is a goal that Arsenal fans will hope will give boost his confidence for the upcoming season, where he will be expected to spearhead Arsenal’s attack and score the bulk of their goals to lift them into title contention.
