Ex-Liverpool man say Manchester United need 3-4 players to crack top four

Jamie Redknapp says Manchester United are well short of being title contenders.

Former Liverpool captain Jamie Redknapp believes Manchester United are a long way from being title contenders.

In his predictions column for SkySports, he told how he feels the club need to get the chequebook out, if new boss Louis van Gaal is to stand a chance.

"I still think they’re three or four players away from returning to the top four. If he gets those in before the deadline, fine, but if not, then I don’t think they’ll make it.

"I certainly don’t see them as title contenders. No one has a magic wand, Van Gaal included."

United fans have been patiently waiting for new additions since Ed Woodward told fans to 'watch this space' a month ago.

Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera have been added, but Van Gaal admitted they were two deals he simply approved, rather than requested.

The club remain linked constantly to Arturo Vidal and Juan Cuadrado, two deals which could come off, but so far have not.

Meanwhile the club's central defence has got weaker since last season, with Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic allowed to leave on free transfers, and no players brought into replace them, with less than a week remaining until the season kicks off.
