Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has said that Gareth Bale is among the best footballers in the world, even hinting he might be number one.
Bale joined Real Madrid last summer for a record £86 millon fee to become the most expensive in the world, and now his manager believes he may be the best.
Speaking ahead of their UEFA Super Cup Final fixture against Sevilla on Tuesday, Ancelotti teased that the Welshman could be the best in the world, but was also quick to include Cristiano Ronaldo in the same question.
“As I said a lot of the time last year, he is the best,” Ancelotti said in his press-conference.
“He is one of the best players in the world now, but I’m not so interested in whether Gareth can be nominated and go on to win it.
“But if I say Gareth deserves to win it, then I could say Ramos, or Ronaldo also deserves to win it.”
Bale scored 24 goals in his opening season at Madrid, including two cup-winning goals in the Copa del Rey and Champions League finals. His phenomenal run from inside his own half to score against Barcelona clinched them the cup, while his header against Atletico Madrid in extra-time sealed the club’s tenth European title.
Seemingly at his peak, now could be the time for Bale to really impose himself and stake a claim to be the world’s best player.
That means going up against team-mate Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, who also plays in La Liga, and should he add even more goals to his game, could see himself become a contender for the Ballon d’Or in the new year.
