Arsenal defeated Manchester City 3-0 this afternoon in the Community Shield with Callum Chambers putting in an excellent performance at centre-back for The Gunners. The £16 million newbie played most of his football at right-back for Southampton - but has really looked the part in a more central position this summer in pre-season for Arsenal.
His competence at the heart of defence is certainly a big fillip for Arsenal - especially after they sold one of their main central defenders yesterday. Club captain Thomas Vermaelen joined Barcelona on a £15 million deal yesterday, bringing to an end his five years at The Emirates.
Vermaelen has struggled ever since the partnership of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker established itself as the number one choice for Arsene Wenger and the Frenchman rewarded the professional attitude of his former armband wearer by offering him the chance to play regular football with a move away from the club.
However, despite the impressive form of Chambers at central defence, Wenger has decided to keep his eyes peeled for a potential centre-back in the remainder of the transfer window. After today's game he informed Arsenal TV:
Wenger: "Vermaelen behaved outstandingly last year - I am grateful for him and I wish him very well" #AFCvMCFC— Arsenal FC (@Arsenal) August 10, 2014
Wenger: "If I can find another centre back I will do it. You make your position with your performances" #AFCvMCFC— Arsenal FC (@Arsenal) August 10, 2014
This morning Arsenal were linked with a move for Borussia Dortmund star Mats Hummels and expect plenty of other names to be linked with a move to The Emirates in the next few weeks - as Arsenal look to replace their departed captain.
Who should Wenger bring in at centre-back?
