Ian Wright has urged Arsenal to sign Raphael Varane or Mats Hummels.
Arsenal defender Calum Chambers was described as 'outstanding' by Arsene Wenger after the Community Shield, but club legend Ian Wright feels more is required in defence.
Following the sale of Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona, the club legend told BBC 5 Live that there were two players in particular he would like to see sign for Arsenal.
"We are going to be close. We do need to sign a couple more players.
"I'd go for Hummels, I'm dying for Varane, Real Madrid, that's the calibre of players I'm looking at.
"Yes there's (other) players around, I'm looking for someone to come in and hit the ground running, who knows what it's like to play under pressure, and those are the players I believe Arsenal should be going for."
Whether the Gunners have a hope of signing either of the two is uncertain.
Hummels, valued at £30 million, has been strongly linked to both Manchester United and Barcelona, but Borussia Dortmund have held them off, and yesterday announced he will be the captain for the forthcoming season.
Real Madrid may be more likely to sell Varane, but only at the right price, and that again could mean £30 million for the young French international, perhaps even more.
He has been linked with a switch to Chelsea in recent weeks, but the Blues have not submitted a bid, and there are no firm indications they will.
Wright's point, however, that Arsenal should be looking for a centre-back to replace Vermaelen is valid, but whether they need to go and splash the cash simply because they can, is open to debate.
With Koscielny and Mertesacker first choice, signing a superstar risks breaking up a successful partnership unnecessarily, or leaving an expensive addition on the bench.
