The Argentine winger endured a frustrating debut campaign at White Hart Lane after joining Spurs for a fee of around £30 million.
Now, Tottenham fans are hoping for a lot more from the 22-year-old - and his potential suggests he is capable of producing it.
During the pre-season friendly against Schalke, however, Lamela was accused of not doing enough by some supporters on social media.
It was only a friendly - and the Argentina only got 45 minutes of action before being replaced at the break. However, fans are still waiting for Lamela to produce the magic that his big-money transfer promised the north London side all those months ago.
Emmanuel Adebayor gave Spurs the lead during the first half, before Roberto Soldado double their tally in the second. Kevin Prince-Boateng then hit back for Schalke and the friendly finished 2-1 in Tottenham's favour.
Lamela's performance, though, had a feel of hit and miss about it. It seemed clear to Spurs supporters that he has all the weapons necessary to become a top player, though it seemed even clearer that the 22-year-old will need even more time to produce his best for the club.
Here's a selection of views from fans on Twitter...
I know its pre-season but we are gonna need more from Ericksen and Lamela.— George (@GEORGIE_35) August 9, 2014
Need to persevere with Holtby and Lamela - you can see fantastic potential in both of them (both a bit frustrating at the moment) #coys— Matt Walker (@mbw_001) August 9, 2014
Holtby the busiest player, if a little rash. Largely untroubled at the back. Lamela quieter than I'd have hoped for. #thfc— Ol (@OlyLister) August 9, 2014
Totally agree with JJ there. Lamela needs to take a few more risks, take on some players etc. #thfc— Sean Hunt (@Tottingham_Sean) August 9, 2014
Let's be honest most fans are watching today to see lamela play well today and so far it hasn't happened for him— darren mccormack (@MccormackDarren) August 9, 2014
Disappointing day for Lamela and Eriksen.— Gavin Christopherson (@GavinC137) August 9, 2014
Will Lamela have a better second season at Spurs?
