Belgium international defender Thomas Vermaelen is on the verge of leaving Arsenal and joining Barcelona.
The former Ajax star has now made his first comments since the transfer was announced, taking to social networking site Twitter to make the following post on Saturday evening:
Manchester United were also interested in Vermaelen, but their advances were reportedly rejected by Arsenal because the North London outfit did not want to do a player-exchange deal.
The 28-year-old becomes the second defender Barcelona have signed this summer following the recruitment of France international Jeremy Mathieu from Valencia.
Vermaelen is also the second Premier League player to move to the Spanish giants this summer, following the arrival of star striker Luis Suarez from Liverpool at Camp Nou.
However, while Suarez will start his Barcelona career as one of the best forwards in the world, Vermaelen will have to convince his new club’s fans that he can return to his best.
Last season the Belgian struggled with injuries and lost his place in defence at Arsenal, with Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny being preferred to him by Gunners manager Arsene Wenger.
