Aston Villa fans react on Twitter to ex-Liverpool man's signing: 'better than what we have'

Aston Villa fans took to Twitter on Friday evening to react to the signing of polarising former Liverpool loanee Aly Cissokho.

After a largely forgettable spell with Liverpool last season, Aly Cissokho’s arrival at Aston Villa has been greeted with an air of ridicule among fans of the former club.

Joining on a four-year deal from Valencia for around £2.5 million, the once-highly-rated French left-back spent the 2013-14 campaign on loan at Anfield but struggled with injuries, looking out of his depth in his 15 league appearances.

The 26-year-old was though a regular in the La Liga side’s lineup the season prior, as well as with Lyon for three campaigns before moving to Spain in August 2012, earning his sole international cap under Laurent Blanc in 2010.

That in mind, while some were quick to mock the signing on that basis of his Reds stint, Cissokho at least has some past credentials, including Champions League experience, which should fill supporters with hope of him become a solid contributor in Paul Lambert’s lineup.

Furthermore, with Villa again proving reluctant to splash out this summer, with Philippe Senderos and Joe Cole arriving on a pair of free transfers, and Kieran Richardson signed from Fulham for a nominal fee, the mere fact that actual cash has been spent is somewhat encouraging.

Perhaps best known for failing a medical with AC Milan in 2009 because of concerns about his teeth, the former Porto defender faces little competition at his position so should see significant minutes, and the sentiment among Villa fans appears somewhat optimistic based on these responses to the deal.
