Tensions were seemingly running high at Real Madrid on Friday afternoon, as three of their players were involved in a social media dispute.
Former Liverpool defender Alvaro Arbeloa retweeted a link to a book on Twitter that was highly critical of his team-mate Iker Casillas.
A line in the book referred to Casillas as ‘a tumour on Madrid’, Arbeloa caused uproar when he shared the link. The Spanish right-back has now apologised to the goalkeeper, claiming that he was unaware of certain claims in the book.
“I made the mistake of retweeting the guide without having read all 98 pages word for word,” Arbeloa wrote on his official Twitter account on Friday.
“Never in my life have I spoken badly about a teammate, and in this instance, I had no intention to do so through an intermediary.
“I apologise to my teammate and captain Iker Casillas, and all fans of Real Madrid who may have been offended.”
Casillas himself was also involved in a social media storm himself, when he ‘liked’ a photo on his official Instagram account that criticised Diego Lopez, although nothing official has been said of the incident.
The two players were set to lock horns for the goalkeeper's position at Madrid this season, but Lopez now looks to be on his way to AC Milan following the arrival of Keylor Navas.
