£21m Tottenham Hotspur target tough to replace states Villarreal teammate

Villarreal midfielder Tomas Pina believes teammate and Spurs target Mateo Musacchio will be tough to replace.

Villarreal centre-back Mateo Musacchio is dominating the headlines in Spain regarding a potential move to Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs are looking to bulk up their defence ahead of the new season and new boss Mauricio Pochettino has earmarked his fellow countryman as his ideal number one centre-back.

Musacchio has proven to be a key player for the Valencian community-based side over the past few seasons, helping the club win promotion back to La Liga and guiding them to the European spots last season.

His possible exit has already caused coach Marcelino Garcia Toral to state that he would be an extremely difficult loss to replace, and fellow teammate Tomas Pina added to his boss’ comments in a latest interview quoted by Spanish publication AS.

He said: “He’s [Musacchio] a great player, a very important footballer. Therefore, his possible exit is a very important role for the club. He plays in a key position and it’s true that if he goes, it will be complicated to replace him.”

According to the latest reports out of Spain, the 23-year-old has been training away from his teammates as Villarreal look to prevent any unnecessary injuries which could hamper a possible deal.

The fee involved to take the player to North London is said to be anywhere between the £17-21 million mark, a hefty sum of money which would be the highest paid for a central defender at White Hart Lane.

Should Spurs manage to conclude a deal for the Argentine star, Musacchio would become Pochettino’s fourth signing of the summer after bringing in Ben Davies, Michel Vorm and Eric Dier.
