Swansea star linked to Liverpool set to star for country as legend retires

Wilfried Bony and Kolo Toure Ivory Coast

The striker, one of the Premier League's top performers, has also been linked to Tottenham this summer.

Didier Drogba's retirement from international football has given Swansea star Wilfried Bony the chance to become the Ivory Coast's new superstar striker.

The 25-year-old, who has already scored 10 goals in 28 games for his country, including 2 in the World Cup in Brazil, has been heavily linked to both Liverpool and Tottenham this summer, with the Reds looking to replace Luis Suarez with the very best forward they can sign.

Having returned to his beloved Chelsea this summer, Drogba is prepared to put all of his energy into his last year or so of club football. And he can do so fully aware of his contribution to what was somewhat of a golden age of Ivorian football.

Drogba made his final appearances for the Elephants at this summer's World Cup, and retires as the third most capped player in the history of the country. However, where the 36-year-old really stands out is his goalscoring, with an astonishing 65 goals he has more than double his nearest rival.

Bony will now get the chance to seize the striker position for his own, having shared it with the Chelsea legend for the last couple of years.

Though he is shorter in height, the Swansea forward has a similar game to Drogba, powerful and quick, and excellent in the air as well as boasting powerful shooting.

Interestingly, Bony took to the Premier League better than Drogba managed in his first season, with the former Vitesse man netting an excellent 25 goals in 48 games.

In comparison, Drogba could only score 16 goals in each of his first two seasons, before exploding into form in his third campaign at Stamford Bridge in 2006/7.

Whether Bony stays at the Swans, or ends up at Anfield or White Hart Lane for big money, one thing is for sure - he is set to score plenty of goals, not least for his country.
