Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has backed Luke Shaw to succeed at Old Trafford, despite his own concerns regarding the pressure he is under.
United signed Shaw for £30 million from Southampton earlier this summer, and the left-back will hope for an instant adjustment to show he can live up to that fee.
Merson believes he can go one better, and eventually prove he is worth even more money.
He told SkySports: "He’s likely to be playing wing-back, which is a nightmare shift running up and down the wing at Old Trafford every week and I always like to see how people handle pressure.
"It’s a big thing and if he starts playing well then he will become a star worth £80 million one day. He could be that good."
Shaw performed solidly in pre-season for United, and will have taken confidence from the side developing a winning habit.
The England international has big shoes to fill replacing Patrice Evra, whose highlight at United was starring in the 2008 Champions League win.
Merson may be making a more direct comparison to the man he emulated at Southampton in Gareth Bale, who signed for Real Madrid last summer for £86 million.
If he goes on to become worth that much money, then several strong seasons lie ahead for the teenager.
