Liverpool-linked Edinson Cavani endures frustrating start to Ligue 1 season

Edinson Cavani, who has been linked with a move to Liverpool and Chelsea this summer, failed to score in Paris Saint-Germain’s disappointing draw against Reims on Friday.

Edinson Cavani was one of the top three strikers in the world when he joined Paris Saint-Germain from Napoli for a reported transfer fee of €64 million last July.

In fact, at the time the former Palermo star, who has been linked with a move to Liverpool this summer, was better than his Uruguay international teammate Luis Suarez, who left the Reds for Barcelona earlier this summer.

But after a frustrating 2013-14 campaign in which he had to play second fiddle to Zlatan Ibrahimovic, things have changed.

True, Cavani did finish last season with 16 goals in 25 Ligue 1 starts and 25 in 43 matches in all competitions, but there was a lingering feeling that he could have done more, that he was not at his best.

Cavani, who is claimed to be on the radar of Chelsea as well, was not at his best during PSG’s opening game of the 2014-15 Ligue 1 season on Friday either, cutting a frustrating figure throughout the 90 minutes.

The former Napoli star was involved in the opening goal of the match, playing Javier Pastore to set up Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the seventh minute.

However, for the majority of the rest of the match, Cavani struggled to hit top form, his miss on the hour mark glaring. He had an attempt saved in the 77th minute by Reims goalkeeper Johny Placide and then failed to get his header on target from a narrow angle on 90 minutes, as the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

Cavani’s display against Reims left much to desired: he clearly appeared to be in a slump that was so frustrating to watch at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

But as they say: former is temporary, class is permanent. Despite his dip in form and frustrations, Cavani remains a top-class striker and will regain his touch sooner rather than later.
