The goalkeeper's transfer to the Bundesliga champions is one of the more bizarre transfers of the summer. Reina has signed a three-year deal with Bayern, who paid Liverpool just £2 million for his services.
It's a rather unambitious move from the Spaniard, who at the age of 31, still has plenty to offer. He should be in his prime years as a goalkeeper and playing at a club where he is the number one, but instead Reina will for the majority of the time be sitting on the bench watching his side win trophy after trophy.
Reina ends an eight-year spell at Anfield where he won the FA Cup, the League Cup, the UEFA Super Cup and three consecutive Golden Glove awards. Considering his achievements, his career at Liverpool ended on a rather sour note for both club and player
In Brendan Rodgers's second season as Liverpool manager, it became clear that he no longer fancied Reina as his first-choice keeper, and decided to sign Simon Mignolet from Sunderland.
The Spaniard was thus shipped out to Napoli for the 2013-14 season on loan, where he made 41 appearances in all competitions and helped the Serie A side win the Coppa Italia and qualify for the Champions League.
Bayern's interest became apparent last weekend when it emerged that they were looking for a goalkeeper to deputise for Manuel Neuer. Reina was one of three goalkeepers, including Victor Valdes and Artur Boruc, who were under consideration.
Liverpool fans are largely disappointed to see Reina leave, while others have questioned the price-tag and the keeper's ambitions.
Here is a selection of their tweets.
Pepe Reina has signed for Bayern Munich. Many many memories and one player I'll always remember, best of luck Pepe.— (@LFCSociety) August 8, 2014
I respect Reina, but I wouldn't call him loyal. He tried to engineer moves away to Arsenal & Barca. Agger is loyal, he rejected other clubs.— Jason Roberts (@JasonRoberts21) August 8, 2014
Considering goalkeepers can play way into their 30s, £2m for 31-year-old Pepe Reina is an absolute steal #LFC— The Premier League 6 (@premierleague_6) August 8, 2014
Goodbye Reina. Will never forget you. :')— AliaOthman (@AliaLiverpool) August 8, 2014
