Manchester United's ‘Class of ‘92’ were defeated 5-1 by Salford City in the reunion friendly match that saw Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt, Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Mikael Silvestre, and Robbie Savage reunite.

United teenager James Wilson scored four goals for the reserve team that triumphed 4-1 over Manchester City in the Senior Cup final.
Meanwhile, United legend Paul Scholes insists he does not think about the ‘glory days’ and believes he has handled his retirement well. The newest member of the BT Sport punditry team also stated he wouldn’t hold back with his opinions, despite ‘upsetting’ Wayne Rooney earlier this summer after suggesting the United No.10 was “past his best”.
“I say it as I think it is. It might upset people,” said Scholes.
“Whether it is right or wrong, it's up to people to decide. But it will be my opinion.”
“I think I have handled retirement OK. I will always miss playing but I have to realise I can't go on forever,” he added.
Former United coach and player, Phil Neville believes Louis van Gaal has an ‘easier job’ after last season under David Moyes, which he described as a ‘disaster’.
"I think it was almost an impossible job to replace Sir Alex Ferguson. Louis van Gaal has it much easier in that respect,” stated Neville.
"Last year was a failure, a disaster but we cannot blame David Moyes.”
In transfer news, Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen is ‘close’ to a move to Barcelona, according to The Guardian after United reportedly ‘pulled out’ of a deal to sign the Belgian defender. The reports also suggests Louis van Gaal refused to include a player for exchange as part of the deal.
The Metro reports that Arsenal had wanted Chris Smalling as part of a deal taking Vermaelen to Old Trafford and that this demand had resulted in United’s loss of interest in the proposed deal.
The Mirror reports that United have turned their attention to Mehdi Benatia but the report also suggests the centre back is viewed as the man to partner Vermaelen.
The Metro claims Colombia winger Juan Cuadrado is ‘on the verge’ of completing a £36 million move to Old Trafford from Fiorentina.
The Daily Star claims United are set to make a ‘massive’ £45 million bid to sign Arturo Vidal from Juventus as the Chile star remains heavily linked with the club.
