Chadli can be like a new signing for Tottenham, says ex-Spurs midfielder

Ex-Tottenham Hotspur midfielder David Howells is backing Nacer Chadli to shine for the club this season, despite rumours of his potential departure.

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder David Howells believes Nacer Chadli will be like a new signing for the club this season, backing the Belgian winger to put the disappointment of his debut campaign behind him.

Signed from FC Twente last summer for £7 million, Chadli went on to score five goals in 34 appearances for the club, but his performances failed to impress fans at White Hart Lane, amid claims from his agent that he was unhappy about being played out of position and with a lack of first-team minutes.

Recent reports have seen the 25-year-old’s name mentioned in potential part-exchange deals for Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin and PSV Eindhoven’s Memphis Depay, but Howells believes it would be a mistake to give up on him after just 12 months.

‘Chadli was very good at the World Cup I thought, among those players like [Mousa] Dembele, so if [Mauricio] Pochettino can just get a little bit more out of all of them then I think we’ll do ever so well,’ he told Sky Sports News Radio.

‘The lack of expectation will probably help as well, as they don’t have the same pressure to perform this season.’

While one could have seen the arrival of Pochettino has the chance to kick-start his career at Spurs, it appears that the new boss is more than willing to offload Chadli, with competition for places in the midfield fierce as it is.

However, the 23-times capped international is said to be keen to fight for his future at the club and, having shone in Eredivisie and for the national team in the past, another crack at the Premier League could just be what’s needed to see him prove his potential.
