Chelsea have landed in Turkey ahead of a mini-tournament in Istanbul. Jose Mourinho’s side will play two 45-minute matches against hosts Fenerbahce and Besiktas as part of an event that is raising money for the families affected by the Soma mining disaster in May.
A strong 25-man squad touched down in Istanbul on Thursday, including Spanish stars Fernando Torres, Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas, Brazilian trio Oscar, Willian and Ramires, and Germany’s 2014 World Cup winner Andre Schurrle.
Speaking ahead of the tournament, the club’s legend John Terry underlined its importance.
‘First and foremost us going there is to support the charity and the families that suffered,’ the former England international defender told Chelsea’s official website.
‘From that aspect it’s for a great cause. From the club’s perspective it sends the right message that we’re supporting and going there to hopefully help the families.
‘It tells you about the power of football. Regardless of what happens in football, what team you support, there are certain things in life when everyone comes together’.
Terry could face one of his former teammates Demba Ba in the tournament. The Senegal international joined Besiktas from Chelsea earlier this summer after failing to make a huge impact at Stamford Bridge since his switch to the Blues from Newcastle United in January 2013 (click here to read more).
Ahead of the match, Ba made it clear which clubs’ fans he thinks are better by posting the following picture on Instagram with the message: ‘❤️❤️❤️Best fans ever ❤️❤️❤️’.
