Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal reportedly wants two more deals before the start of the new season.
Vermaelen has been tipped as a replacement to fill the void created by the exits of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand while Ajax star Blind represents a holding player who can offer cover at left-back.
“Manager Louis van Gaal is anxious for more signings following the club’s return from their pre-season tour in America and wants to close deals for Vermaelen and Ajax wing-back Daley Blind before his Premier League bow against Swansea City on August 16,” reports the Mail.
United are thought to hold the advantage for Vermaelen over Barcelona despite the Spanish giants having made the first move for the Arsenal captain.
Sky Sports reported yesterday that Vermaelen would prefer a move to Manchester United, but the Mail has suggested that means United will end up paying a higher price for the Belgian because Arsenal are selling to a rival.
A fee of £12-15 million is something that United can stretch to and Vermaelen is an attractive proposition because of his leadership qualities and his Premier League experience.
United have always had a good chance of snapping up Blind should they make a move because of the player’s relationship with van Gaal.
LvG put a lot of faith in Blind during the Netherlands’ World Cup campaign and he’s a player who can offer a great deal in different positions to the current Manchester United side.
United currently don’t have a back up option at left-back to Luke Shaw as Alexander Buttner and Patrice Evra have both left the club for fresh challenges.
It will be interesting to see if United can do deals before the start of the new season because they’re facing a race against the clock if van Gaal does want to get these two players in before the game against Swansea.
