Tottenham may lose out to Besiktas in race for £5m River Plate star

Mauricio Pochettino may have to move fast if he wishes to sign Manuel Lanzini from River Plate with Besiktas closing in on a deal for the Argentine.

Tottenham Hotspur have suffered a setback in their rumoured pursuit of 21-year-old midfielder Manuel Lanzini, after it was revealed that Besiktas were closing in on a deal for the player.

According to a report from, River Plate president Matias Patanian has revealed that the Slaven Bilic-managed side are in pole position to complete a deal.

"We have received a very serious offer for Lanzini and are working to complete this transfer," he told reporters.

"The only offer we have received is from Besiktas for Lanzini, any other news linking our players away from the club are simply rumours."

Though Tottenham’s interest in the player has never been confirmed, it is widely thought that manager Mauricio Pochettino is keen on recruiting young South American talent to the Spurs squad.

And while Besiktas look favourites to land the £5-million-rated attacking midfielder, a deal between the Turkish club and River Plate previously stalled after a disagreement over the price tag attached to the player.

Tottenham are not the only Premier League club to be previously linked with a move for the Argentine, with Manchester City and Chelsea both thought to have been tracking the 21-year-old in previous months.

A product of the River Plate youth system, Lanzini previously spent time on loan at Fluminense in Brazil and has been capped four times by Argentina at under-20 level.

Spurs are also thought to be keen on recruiting a new striker following reports of rumoured interest in Mattia Destro and Samuel Eto’o.

The latter of the two is available on a free transfer but previously turned down a move to West Ham United after the club failed to match the forward’s wages demands.

Sunderland have now entered the race to sign the Cameroonian, who is thought to be keen on remaining in the Premier League.
