The left winger made his breakthrough in the past 12 months after a successful Eredivisie campaign with PSV was followed up by an impressive showing at the World Cup in Brazil with the Netherlands.
Manchester United and Real Madrid have both been linked with a move but it is Spurs who now appear to be the frontrunners for his signature.
Spurs have yet to replace Gareth Bale after the Welshman left to join Real Madrid last summer, as Erik Lamela struggled during his debut campaign in English football, but Depay and Lamela could cause havoc on both sides of the Spurs attack next season if the young Dutch star is signed.
Lamela joined Spurs for a club-record fee in the region of £30 million last summer after an impressive season in Serie A with AS Roma as a 20-year-old.
Depay is 20-years-old now and it is therefore a perfect comparison to make as both players enjoyed similar successes at the same age, and Depay could be set to follow Lamela's path to Spurs in the next week or so.

Gareth Bale was 23-years-old during his most successful season at Spurs before making the switch to La Liga and he scored 21 goals two seasons ago as he was the best player in the side by quite a margin.
Though Lamela and Depay both managed to pick up more assists and were more successful with their take-ons than the Welshman managed in the season's focussed on.
Depay's statistics from last season are very similar to those of Bale's in his final Spurs campaign, and the Dutchman created more chances whilst having more shots than the Welsh star managed that year.
Lamela did score more goals in the season before last than Depay managed last season, as well as registering a better shooting accuracy percentage, and the Argentine will surely deliver the goods under Pochettino this season after some strong performances during the club's pre-season campaign so far.
If Spurs can seal a move for Depay, they will surely have replaced Bale in the form of two young stars, and the prospect of facing Tottenham with Lamela and Depay on either side of Christian Eriksen is a devastating thought, and one that could deliver success at White Hart Lane in upcoming seasons.
How good a signing would Depay be for Spurs?
