News, views and rumours relating to Manchester United in the past 24 hours.
The Daily Mail states striker Wayne Rooney will be the next Manchester United captain, although official confirmation has yet to be released by the club.
In transfer news, reports persist that United are lining up a £8 million move for Nigel de Jong. The Netherlands and AC Milan midfielder, formerly of Manchester City, could be viewed as an alternative for Louis van Gaal to Arturo Vidal.
Meanwhile, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger confirmed today that United have made a bid to sign Thomas Vermaelen as the Red Devils challenge Barcelona for the Belgian defender’s signature this summer. Reports suggest Louis van Gaal is prepared to pay £15 million to sign the Gunners’ skipper. However, Wenger suggested the club would prefer to sell the player to a foreign club.
Wenger said: “Manchester United are part of the group (of bidders).”
“Vermaelen could leave us because he needs to play now. We're in a position where it's difficult to stand in his way.”
“We would prefer to sell him aboard. That is an option. We have offers from abroad as well. We have bids. You will know very soon,” he added.
Sky Sports suggests, however, that United are the ‘favourites’ to sign Thomas Vermaelen, despite Wenger’s comments.
The Guardian, meanwhile, suggests United are ‘favourites’ to sign Angel Di Maria of Real Madrid after Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi stated the Argentine winger is “too expensive” for the French champions.
The Metro claim Angel Di Maria has been offered £120,000 per week in wages to sign for the Red Devils.
Netherlands defender Daley Blind remains linked with a move to Old Trafford, as reports suggest Dutch champions Ajax are ‘demanding’ £17 million for their star.
However, Ajax youth coach Richard Witschge stated Daley Blind is expected to leave the club soon.
“I think Daley Blind will be leaving soon. I have a feeling,” he told Heldenonline.
“He has been training by himself. I think he has done that, because there’s something going on.”
Reports suggest United have ‘agreed’ terms worth £182,000 per week with Arturo Vidal to join United as Juventus look set to increase their demands for the Chile midfielder.
United have been given a ‘green light’ to sign Fredy Gaurin by Inter Milan according to reports originating in Italy that suggest the midfielder is another alternative for Louis van Gaal should the deal to sign Arturo Vidal fall through.
