The player is surplus to requirements at Manchester City, but would be a superb signing for Tottenham.
Matija Nastasic is said to be available for transfer from Manchester City, a rare thing for a young player with so much talent to be deemed expendable by one of the richest clubs in the world. And Tottenham Hotspur should be doing all within their power to sign him up.
Arsenal are also pursuing the Serbian defender, still just 21-years-old, but the player will know he is set to be little more than he was at Manchester City under Arsene Wenger, a backup to the first choice pairing of Vincent Kompany and Martin Demichelis. With City about to sign Eliaquim Mangala for big money, Nastasic is set to be pushed further down the pecking order.
But at Arsenal, he will competing with versatile Callum Chambers, who impressed at centre back in the weekend friendlies, another young player signed for big money, to be back up for Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker.
At Tottenham, Nastasic would be undisputed first choice alongside Jan Vertonghen, something that would be of far greater use to a young footballer than the dozen or so appearances he would make at either Eastlands or the Emirates.
He has proved himself an excellent player already in the Premier League, very impressive for someone so young, and he has also taken in a solid season in Serie A with Fiorentina, before he signed for City.
Musacchio's signing will come with an element of danger, given that he has never played in the demanding Premier League. In one of his four seasons of top flight football with Villarreal, the club were relegated from La Liga, and in the next he was therefore playing Segunda Division.
It is only this previous season that he has exhibited the form that has seen him command the £17 million interest from Spurs, a figure that may not be enough to secure his signature given some issues concerning a sell-on percentage relating to former club River Plate.
For such money, Spurs could pursue any number of proven Premier League central defenders, with Dejan Lovren costing little more when moving from Southampton to Liverpool.
Nastasic may just be one of the best options available, and what's more Tottenham fans would be able to revel at the chance to beat Arsenal to one of their targets.
Would Nastasic be a better signing than Musacchio?
