The big news coming out of Goodison Park today is that defender John Stones has penned a new contract at Goodison Park having impressed hugely at the end of last term. Stones, 20, joins Ross Barkley in committing his future to the Toffees despite interest from elsewhere, and manager Roberto Martinez was understandably delighted.
"It is an important signing for the Club and a really good reward for a young footballer with a fantastic future," said the Spaniard. "He had an excellent season in 2013/14 and it’s really good news all round. It is very important that we continue to let our youngsters continue to develop into bigger roles."
Stones is tipped to be the next big thing in English football, and the centre back says that it's now his dream and ambition to captain Everton upon signing his new deal.
"I’d love to captain Everton," Stones admitted. "It’s a massive dream of mine and the big name players that have done it in the past, I would love to follow in their footsteps. I’d like to think that I have the attributes [to be a captain]. I’d like to think that I can do it in the future and, if that chance came along, I would jump on it straight away."
A name that has been consistently linked with Everton during the summer is Lille's former Chelsea winger Salomon Kalou. The Ivorian is reportedly angling for a move back to England, and reports today suggest that Everton are set to do battle with Arsenal and Liverpool for his services.
Elsewhere, former Everton star Landon Donovan has announced that he will retire at the end of the current MLS season. The LA Galaxy forward missed out on a place in the United States World Cup squad, and has now decided to hang up his boots at the age at 32. Donovan enjoyed two loan spells at Goodison Park under David Moyes, playing 22 games and scoring two goals over those stays.
