Koeman aims to improve Taïder following Algerian's loan move to Saints

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman hopes to nurture Saphir Taïder and improve the twenty-two year old's game, after signing him on season-long loan.

Saphir Taïder has signed for Southampton on season-long loan from Serie A giants Internazionale.

The move sees Southampton bad boy Dani Osvaldo move on season-long loan in the other direction, both sides have the option to sign the player they have loaned, should he adequately impress his new club.

Taïder has experienced limited first team opportunities since swapping Bologna for Milan, with Inter boss Walter Mazzarri signing Yann M'Vila in addition to the imminent deal to sign Gary Medel from Cardiff City.

While Taïder is still regarded as a prospect with considerable potential by many Internazionale supporters, it is thought that he was not in Mazzarri's plans for the new campaign, despite scoring against Manchester United in the International Champions Cup.

The twenty-two year old Algerian midfielder links up with former Bologna team-mate Gastón Ramírez at St. Mary's, and boss Ronald Koeman is hopeful of improving the player before deciding on whether to make his move permanent.

"It’s part of our philosophy for the club to bring in talented young players who like to learn and develop themselves, and that’s true of Saphir," Koeman told the club's official website.

"First of all, he is a talented football player. He’s 22 and has already played for Algeria at the World Cup."

"He can play as a controlled midfielder, but he can also move up around the box and up front, which is a good thing for a coach or manager because it brings more possibilities to the players in the team. He brings competition to the squad."

"He can still learn some things, so we will train him and develop him this season. Over the course of the year, we will then make a decision about the future of the player."

Saints fans keen to get a first glimpse of Saphir Taïder in this Saturday evening's pre-season friendly against Bayer Leverkusen may have to wait, though, with Koeman's confirmation that Taïder is just ten days into his pre-season programme.

"He’s ten days into his pre-season, so he needs to be in better physical shape but we’ll give him training and he will be ready for the kick-off," Koeman assured fans."

"He will start training tomorrow morning and, depending on how he does over the next few days, we will see whether he will take part in the friendly on Saturday. I will make that decision on Friday."

Southampton kick off their Premier League campaign with a trip to Anfield to face Liverpool on August the 17th.
