Ex-Arsenal cup winner: Sagna had gone past his sell-by date

Former Arsenal League Cup winner Charlie Nicholas says the club did well to move on Bacary Sagna.

Bacary Sagna was unveiled as a Manchester City player this week, for the first time since his free transfer from Arsenal was announced.

The Frenchman had turned down the Gunners' offers of a renewed contract, and said upon arrival that he wanted to win trophies at City.

His place in the team is by no means guaranteed, having to compete with star man Pablo Zabaleta, while Arsenal have acted quickly to replace him.

Former Arsenal League Cup winner Charlie Nicholas believes Arsenal have actually got a better deal with Mathieu Debuchy.

He told SkySports: "Chelsea and Arsenal are the two top teams that have impressed me the most with their new signings. I like Mathieu Debuchy – Bacary Sagna has gone past his sell-by date – and I like Alexis Sanchez, as well."

Sagna is now 31, and if you are discussing whether he is worth shelling out huge contract money on, Nicholas has a vague point.

Arsenal have never, and did not want to, be stuck paying £100,000 a week plus to a player in a couple of years who will be 33.

The club should have extra confidence that Mathieu Debuchy was selected ahead of him for France at the World Cup.

However to suggest he has 'gone past his sell by date' is certainly more than a little harsh. He was clearly Arsenal's first choice right-back last season, with Arsene Wenger reluctant to pick Carl Jenkinson.

If he cannot dislodge Pablo Zabaleta at City however, and lands up being a highly paid reserve, Nicholas may land up feeling he has to a degree been proved right.
