On-loan Manchester City wonderkid compared to James Rodriguez

Marcos Lopes 'shares plenty of similarities' with the World Cup star, according to Lille coach Rene Girard.

The 18-year-old has shown plenty of promise at Manchester City, getting fans excited after assisting twice in the Capital One Cup in January, a tournament City later went on to win.

And now new club Lille, who signed the youngster on loan this summer, have been similarly excited by Lopes' progress.

Indeed, boss Girard has compared the winger to James Rodriguez, the man Real Madrid recently signed for a fee that could rise to over £70 million.

"Our gazes fell on Lopes," he told RMC Sport. "City needed to loan out this young Portuguese lad.

"He comes having participated in this year's Under-19 European Championship, where Portugal were beaten by Germany in the final.

"He has a great left-foot and is a good passer. If I was to compare him in style to anyone, I would say that James Rodriguez and him share plenty of similarities.

"What he brings us is bundles of technique. He is young and ambitious. After a discussion with their reserves coach Patrick Vieira, Man City decided that Lille would be an ideal place for him to grow further as a player."

Lille finished third in Ligue 1 last term and could be the perfect place for Lopes to further develop.

Joe Cole was another Premier League player to make a temporary move to the French club during his time at Liverpool, enjoying a productive campaign there despite his mixed time at Anfield.

For Lopes, a strong season could see him back in the fold at Man City. Sooner or later, though, his time will almost certainly come, as his talent simply looks too great.
