A player of the Dutchman's undoubted potential could be of use in the Premier League, but the Barcelona man looks destined for Turkey instead.
It is fair to say Ibrahim Afellay has had a difficult few years as a professional footballer.
His move to Barcelona in 2011 was supposed to have been the making of the talented attacking midfielder, at a club that has historically had superb connections with the very best Dutch talent.
The 28-year-old moved to the Nou Camp as one of Europe's most talented international footballers, and a real prospect for the Netherlands, but a series of serious injuries curtailed his Barca career, restricting him to just 7 appearances over the last three years at the Spanish giants.
He has been consistently linked to Tottenham over the years, having struggled to break into Barcelona's match day squad, and Spurs aren't the only side linked to the Dutchman. Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United have all been mentioned at various points as well, presumably because sadly, there is an international class player going to waste.
A loan spell at Schalke two years ago hinted at a return to form, but his run of 4 goals in 15 games was again cut short but injury.
So finally, after years of disappointment, Afellay again looks set to head out on loan from Barca, and unless one of these Premier League sides jump in, it looks like he is taking in a spell in Turkey with Besiktas.
L'Equipe are stating the Besiktas switch is well on its way to completion, and Afellay may now link up with the Istanbul giants, who signed Chelsea forward Demba Ba this summer.
