Report - Alex Song has been told he won't play at Barcelona if he stays

Manchester United linked Alex Song reportedly knows that if he stays at Barcelona, he won't play this season.

Catalan based newspaper Mundo Deportivo claims that Manchester United linked Alex Song knows that if he stays at the club beyond this summer, he knows he won’t play under Luis Enrique.

Enrique has seemingly made his plans for Barca clear ahead of the new season and there doesn’t seem to be a way into the first tam for Song, which could prompt an exit over the next couple of weeks before the transfer window closes.

“The midfielder already knows from the mouth of his own coach that if he stays, it will only be for training,” reports MD.

Reports last month suggested that Manchester United had already been offered the midfielder in a transfer and Louis van Gaal now has a clear green light if he feels Song can offer something to his first team.

From the player’s point of view he now has to choices.

The 26-year-old’s current deal doesn’t expire until 2017 and he has the security of a well paid contract to fall back on with Barcelona.

The problem with that is that he won’t play, which will affect things like his form, his fitness and his sharpness, which won’t aid him by the time his deal expires and he has to find a new club.

His other choice is to push for a move away through his agent which is possible as Barca could use additional funds as they look to secure players like Thomas Vermaelen from Song’s former club Arsenal.

If van Gaal doesn’t decide that he wants Song, then there are several other opportunities with other Premier League teams likely to be interested.

Song remains a very good central midfielder, who is capable of dropping off and playing a holding role and even if a return to England isn’t possible, he could still attract interest from various parts of Europe.
