Martin Keown: Arsenal lack midfielders with pace

Arsenal legend Martin Keown believes that Arsene Wenger’s side could do with a midfielder with pace.

Arsenal need midfielders with pace to compete for the Premier League title this season – that’s according to club legend Martin Keown.

‘I feel that you have to look at the mobility in midfield and how much pace is in there’, the 48-year-old told Sports Mole. ‘It's not an emergency - he's got so many midfield players - but it's probably some pace that he (manager Arsene Wenger) wants to introduce to the team’.

It will come as a surprise to many that the former England international defender believes that there is not enough pace in the midfielders that the Gunners currently have in their squad.

Theo Walcott (who can play as a forward but is likely to be deployed out wide) and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (who is open to playing in central midfield more regularly - click here to read more) both are known for their pace, while Aaron Ramsey and Santi Cazorla are not exactly slow in their movements.

Then there is summer signing Alexis Sanchez, another attack-minded player who can play out wide up front or more centrally as part of a two-man attackline.

As Keown points out, Arsenal do indeed have a number of midfielders, all with potential and quality, but Wenger has no need to bring in another in that department as long as the attack-minded players are willing to do their share of the defensive work.

Or does he? There have been suggestions that due to the lack of pace and the age of Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini, the 13-time English champions need a specialist defensive midfielder.

The North London outfit have been strongly linked with World Cup and Champions League winner Sami Khedira of Real Madrid, but the Germany international midfielder is not really someone who has abundance of pace.

Another player mentioned in regard to a move to the Emirates Stadium this summer is Portugal international and Sporting Lisbon star William Carvalho, who is also believed to be on the radar of Manchester United.
